The 31,895 square foot first floor accommodates a comprehensive cancer center consisting of radiation oncology, infusion, medical oncology and surgical oncology. Also located on the first floor is the education center consisting of a 180-seat auditorium, conference rooms and cancer resource center. Wheeler Residence - Wheeler Residence - Sacramento, California Surrounded by 80-year-old olive trees on a ½ acre site, this 2,800 square foot single-family residence is comprised of three linear volumes offset from each other and connected by light-filled corridors. The layout of each volume offers a distinct program, allowing the owners to move from public, semi-public and private spaces freely through the open-ended corridors. The interior space of each volume is accentuated by high sloped ceilings constructed of opposing shed roofs with each volume connected by flat roofed corridors. The ends of each corridor have un-interrupted floor to ceiling windows, flooding the spaces with an abundance of natural light. The program of the center volume, PUBLIC, consists of an open kitchen and dining area that can be extended through a 14-foot bi-folding wall that opens onto a semi-enclosed rear patio perfect for entertaining family and guest. The master suite volume, PRIVATE, offers access to two distinct patios. The rear patio, an extension of the dining room, used for entertaining and a second, is a private semi-enclosed patio just off the master bedroom. The SEMI-PUBLIC volume contains the family room and two guest rooms, one of which has direct access to the rear patio area. The exterior façade is finished in a Caviar black stucco with Cor-Ten steel roofs and facia. The flat-roofed entry and connecting corridors, with floor to ceiling windows, create channels between the high-pitched opposing shed roofs further accentuating the three linear volumes. This work included a complex remodeling of a sector of the existing occupied hospital which added a second and third floor expansion of the 1995 hospital with new corridors, sleep rooms and offices. Lin Family Dentistry - Lin Family Dentistry - Woodland, California Situated on a 1.25-acre site, this 4,400 square foot ground up dental office provides 8 operatories, staff support space, a private physician office and a patient waiting area. The program layout is modeled around a collaborative care module where a central care zone, that includes space for physicians, staff and other care providers, aids in facilitating a collaborative environment easily and efficiently between treatment areas. The treatment areas are situated to either side of the central care zone providing 3 hygiene treatment rooms, 4 standard treatment rooms and 1 private treatment room adjacent the physician’s private office. Another key program layout is the main entry into the building that faces east. This addresses an element of Fung Shui which responds to one of the client’s main requirements which helped determined how the building would be oriented on the site. This idea continues through the building with all major entry points facing east, such as the entry into the treatment areas and the physician’s private office. The exterior design consists of elegant massing cladded in a blend of modern materials and warm natural finishes to promote scale, interest and comfort. The overall massing contains two volumes. A tall thin sloped volume, sloping upwards west to east, is accentuated with vertical boxed metal paneling and positioned to the rear serving as a backdrop while cradling a lower volume facing the main street. The lower volume is a blend of neutral tones consisting of stucco and stacked stone, which helps promote an inviting intimate pedestrian scale as one walks up to the main entry. A thin large overhang wraps around the front elevation capping off the lower volume, further accentuation the pedestrian scale. The program was continually growing and the existing 1,300 sf instructional space was no longer suitable for their needs. RBDS started by developing a scoping document that cataloged their existing space, evaluated their future needs and surveyed existing buildings on the campus that would fulfill the growing program requirements. An existing 3,200 sf unused agricultural lab building was selected for their future home. The newly renovated building accommodates a large multi-functional classroom that incorporates instructional space, 2 dental stations, a viewing area outside the procedure room, and multiple lab testing stations. The space program also includes a radiology/imaging room, separate kennel areas for canines and felines, office space and a break room for professors and students. The newly renovated veterinary technician building gives the program much needed space for a highly enriching educational experience for current and future students. The layout of the residence is split between two opposing wings. The north wing accommodates the children’s bedrooms, an office and music room, while the south wing accommodates the living spaces, large chef style kitchen and a grand master suite. The entry foyer and family room have 18’ high ceilings while the remainder of the ceilings are 10’ high. This accommodates large windows to allow natural light and uninterrupted views of the landscape. The ends of all corridors also have uninterrupted floor to ceiling windows, flooding the interior spaces with an abundance of natural light. The exterior façade will incorporate a rain screen system consisting of stone veneer, stucco and natural wood lap siding sections. This system will provide a well-ventilated air cavity between the outer cladding system and the building envelope, creating efficient protection against moisture and UV. In addition, the air cavity between the building envelope and outer cladding system will greatly control and stabilize heat loss/gain within the interior. Project Team: Architect: RBDS, Inc. POTTERY WORLD OUTDOOR SALES OFFICE - Pottery World Outdoor Sales Office - Rocklin, California This small 450sf outdoor sales office needed a major facelift. The existing space lacked storage, adequate display for merchandise, and a functional layout for customers and staff. More importantly, it did not represent the company’s luxury home décor and design image. By blending contemporary and industrial finishes along with modern technologies we were able to transform this small, outdated sales office into a warm, open, and inviting functional space for Pottery World’s customers and staff. The new sales counter layout is split symmetrically between two opposing entry doors with staff access positioned to the middle. The material for the sale counters features a dramatic dark solid surface, “Laurent” by Dekton, with copper veins and is accented with a Corten steel low transaction counter. A wood soffit lined with flat steel panels above accentuates each counter. The new layout for the product sample display wall retained the existing concept, but we applied a contemporary language to it. The individual samples are magnetized and positioned on flat steel panels backed by a wood accent wall. The existing analog product books were replaced with touch screen monitors allowing easy updating as new products are introduced and old products are discontinued. While two complementing styles of carpet tile flooring help dampen the acoustics from the solid surfaces, they also help in area designation and directional purpose to the new layout.
